We Won’t Shut Off Internet But We Will Be Ruthless: Matiang’i Warning Over Hate Speech During Elections

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i says security agencies will act within the law when dealing with hate speech mongers during the electioneering period in 2022.

Speaking on Wednesday, June 30, during the launch of the National Crime Information Centre (NCIC) strategic plan at the Bomas of Kenya, Matiang’i assured that the govt will not resort to oppressive measures such as shutting down the internet.

“We will not do things like switching off the internet, it will not happen here…we will not harass people but because we are confident, we will act according to the law and call people to account,” he said.

However, the tough-talking CS issued a stern warning to lawbreakers who will try to spread hate speech during the period.

“We will be very ruthless when it comes to those who interfere with others’ freedoms…we will not hesitate or be intimidated by pressures or complaints from anybody. We will protect Kenya,” said Matiang’i.

“To those who break the law, we will arrange a good meeting between you and the law. Any threats to the vision of Kenya should be met with the full force of law. ”

Matiang’i also assured that security agents are now highly trained on matters internet and they are prepared to do their part.

“I want to assure the country that we will do our part and role.. this country is a democracy. We are a democracy by choice and it was not imposed on us,” he said.

“We will uphold individual and collective freedoms.. and freedom of speech..”

Most Kenyans Don’t Have Wallets: CBK on Why New Notes Are Aging Fast

The Central Bank of Kenya(CBK) has once again been forced to defend the durability of the new Kenyan currency notes which have been in circulation for about two years.

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Finance and Budget on Tuesday, June 29, CBK Governor Patrick Njoroge reiterated that the new notes are far superior to the old notes.

“It’s no question the new banknotes are technically superior to Kenya’s old notes,” he said, citing features such as advanced security, varnish to reduce tear and wear, and features to support identification by visually impaired persons.

Dr. Njoroge, however, admitted that the lower denominational Sh.50 and Sh.100 notes deteriorate faster due to a high rate of circulation and significant mishandling including ‘destructive tests’.

“Handle New Notes Properly to Stop Ageing”- CBK to Kenyans

According to the CBK governor, most Kenyans don’t own wallets, which defeats the purpose since the new notes were designed with wallets in mind.

“The fading occurs owing to how we treat the currency. We are harsh in treating the currency. As a matter of fact, we all know how people are supposed to put them in wallets.

“Most of us don’t have wallets. We put the money in other places,” Njoroge explained.

At the same time, the CBK governor said there wasn’t any shortage of the notes and the supply to the market was consistent with the demands.

“If the notes are in poor state, we remove them from circulation and destroy them, exchanging the notes for new ones. However, it may take time before notes return to the CBK from circulation,” said Njoroge.

Adding: “If you have a dirty note, you can actually present this to your bank and exchange it for new notes or deposit the dirty notes. You can also directly exchange your dirty notes at the CBK.”

Migori Governor Obado Joins Uhuru Succession Race

The race to succeed President Kenyatta in 2022 has a new entrant in the form of Migori governor Okoth Obado.

The controversial county boss confirmed his bid for the presidency during an interview on Ramogi FM on Wednesday. Obado said he will seek the top seat on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.

He also confirmed his exit from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. Obado said his focus now is strengthening his new political outfit, adding that he was not out to divide the Luo community.

“My exit from ODM is not in bad faith. I have taken a short break to strengthen my party that steered me to the governorship. It is the bus that ushered me into active politics and I’m back to end the journey that I started,” he said.

Obado further rubbished claims that he quit ODM to form an alliance with DP Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

“There is no link between PDP and Ruto’s UDA. In fact, the party was coined recently after we had formed PDP…We have always been isolated in one cocoon and any attempt to break the barrier is met with reprisals. Let them not politicise this issue of PDP, we are not at war with any party, we are only advocating for our agenda,” he stated.

“PDP is not meant to divide the Luo community as alleged by some people. It is a party with a national outlook and I will be using it to vie for the presidency. Having many parties is not a crime, let us unite and strengthen it.”

“Those that branded me a Jubilee mole are the same ones who are now working closely with Jubilee. Now that I’m seeking a top office in the PDP, they now call me Ruto’s point man,” Obado added.

Why Obado Wants Sharon Otieno Murder Case Postponed

Migori Governor Okoth Obado has applied to have a case in which he is accused of killing Sharon Otieno postponed.

Through his lawyer Kioko Kilukumi, Obado has written to the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji informing him that he won’t be able to travel to Nairobi for the hearing of his murder case due to the travel restrictions imposed on the county.

“In light of the directions issued by the Ministry of Health on June 17 for the greater public good and to avoid the quick spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19 to the rest of the country, my client is unable to travel outside the Covid-19 hotspot zone (Migori county),” reads the letter by lawyer Kioko Kilukumi.

The application to postpone the trial came on the day the family of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno asked the Judiciary to fast-track the case against Obado.

The trial is set to kick off on July 5 and proceed for 10 days ending on July 15. But Obado wants the date pushed further.

He also wants the case to be mentioned on Monday next week virtually before the trial judge so as to fix the new hearing dates.

The DPP, however, said his office was ready to proceed with the hearing as scheduled and will oppose Obado’s application to have the case postponed.

“We shall be ready to proceed with the trial and will prepare adequately to oppose if they make the application in an open court,” Haji said.

The prosecution has lined up 37 witnesses to testify against the governor and his co-accused.

Monthly Stipend For Health Volunteers in Nairobi Increased

Over 6,000 community health volunteers in Nairobi will receive a monthly stipend starting next month.

City Hall has allocated Sh308 million towards the remuneration and National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) cover for the volunteers. At least 6,250 volunteer workers will receive Sh3,000 as a monthly stipend and Sh500 in health insurance.

This will see the monthly stipend increase from the current Sh1, 300 to Sh3, 000.

Sh100 million of the Sh308m will be used for the initial payment of the community health volunteers in the coming financial year starting Thursday.

Nairobi County Assembly Budget and Appropriations committee chairperson Mr Robert Mbatia said the programme was to be rolled out in 2019 but had to be withheld because of budget constraints.

Nairobi has a total of 6, 250 community health workers who work in more than 1, 000 health centres across all the 85 wards in the city.

They engage in tracing and referral of health-related cases to the nearest health facilities, conducting home visits to determine health situations, promoting appropriate home care for the sick with the support of health partners and mobilising community members to adopt health promotion practices, among others.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Body (EPRA) on Wednesday, June 30, published a list of petrol stations that were caught selling adulterated fuel.

In a public notice, the agency said it conducted a total of 5,598 tests at 1,237 petroleum sites from April to June 2021. 99 percent of the sites were found to be compliant but 11 were found to be selling diluted fuel.

EPRA said it identified the stations after continuous monitoring of the quality of petroleum motor fuels on sale, transport, and storage throughout the country during the stipulated period.

“The petrol stations that were found to be non-compliant are located in Nairobi, Marsabit, Meru, Trans Nzoia, Homabay, West Pokot, Migori, Nakuru, Kilifi, Meru and Lamu counties,” EPRA said.

A majority of the petrol stations were found to be selling Diesel or Petrol containing high sulphur content – which has a negative impact on the effectiveness of emission control systems.

EPRA closed the pumps and fined some petrol stations up to Sh760,000 in taxes and penalties to have the pumps reopened.

At the same time, the regulator requested members of the public to report suspected cases of petroleum fuels adulteration or export dumping through the hotline number (0709336000) as well as use the Authority’s USSD Code (*363#) and SMS service code (40850).

Here’s a list of the petrol stations selling adulterated fuel:

Rev Lucy Natasha Responds to Claims Of Running Cult and Organizing Threesome for Guest Preacher

Reverend Lucy Natasha has issued a statement in response to damning allegations leveled against her on social media.

A Facebook user by the name Martha Mwihaki Hinga on Tuesday, June 29, dragged the flashy preacher through the mud, alleging that she runs her church like a cult.

In a series of long posts, Martha also claimed that Rev Lucy Natasha organized a threesome session for a Nigerian guest preacher with her aide.

Apparently, Rev. Natasha invited her for dinner together with the Nigerian guest speaker, her mother, brother, and her assistant with a hidden agenda.

“Within 20 minutes I realized that Lucy had left together with her brother and mom, and I in the company of the pastor and the aide were left, little did I know that the girl was part of the script for a Threesome. Hahaha, yes I said a threesome,” said Martha.

She further alleged that she was touched inappropriately during her initiation to pastor Lucy Natasha’s Church.

“I was then requested to follow Rev in a small private extension for sort of some grilling or up-close, a very small extension that could only fit two persons. She asked me to get off my shoes and enter. I think that was now the beginning of my indoctrination to a “cult”,” the post reads in part.

The allegations went viral prompting Reverend Natasha to respond.

Read her full statement below.

We wish to categorically state that we are a ministry committed to maintaining Biblical standards both in Theology and Practice. I Was Only Joking, Please Forgive Me – Omosh

The actor Joseph Kinuthia popularly known as Omosh has expressed his regret over his recent TV interview in which he asked Kenyans for more financial help.

Omosh explained that he was just playing his funny character from ‘Tahidi High’ and he didn’t think Kenyans would take his remarks seriously.

“Mimi sikua najua Wakenya wataudhika hivo. I thought watasema huyu ni ule Omosh joker but they actually took it seriously,” he said.

Adding: “I did not expect that interview to blow out that much. I am an actor and sometimes we say things that turn out to be serious.”

“My biggest regret is going for that interview. I wish I did not go.”

He pleaded for forgiveness saying he will choose his words carefully next time.

“Kenyans please, I know you are forgiving, I’m just your brother. Please I’m so sorry. You’ll never hear that from me again.”

Omosh also said he is still jobless but he has received some offers. “I am ready to rise back. At the moment I am jobless but I have received a few offers,” he said.

The actor maintained that he does not have a drinking problem.

“I have been to rehab twice. For now, I am not drinking and if people want to confirm, let them come to the ground,” he said.

PHOTOS – Inside Grand Mullah’s Massive House, and Car Collection

If there was any doubt that Ahmednasir Abdullahi is a man of means, then his latest interview with Churchill should take care of that.

Their discussion ranged from his early life in Mandera, to how he got into law at the University of Nairobi. He then went on about his journey as a start-up lawyer with few if any clients, and how he got his breakthrough after just 2 years of practicing, through the high-profile case involving Olympics boxer Robert Wangila.

At that time, he was also a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, with a monthly salary of Sh7000. He was living in South C, and according to him, that was enough money for a fairly comfortable lifestyle.

First car: A left-hand drive Suzuki.

Forward to the present day, and the Grand Mullah is living a life of luxury. Straight from his stylish office, you can tell that he likes the fine things. Even his office chair is a Herman Miller – a brand of office chairs that usually retail for over Sh300,000.

His house in Karen is a timeless masterpiece with perfectly manicured lawns. The lawyer is quite private about his life, so it was quite surprising that Churchill was given access.

It is quite hard to tell how big the entire house is or how many bedrooms and bathrooms it has, but this is clearly not your typical home.

In his parking lot, at least 5 expensive vehicles, including two Mercedes G-Wagens, that can retail for close to KSh40 million each brand new in Kenya. Also present is a Bentley and a Porsche.

Check out the photos.

So what does GM do for fun? Well, nothing yet. He said that once he gets home on Friday, he leaves on Monday. He however plans to change that by taking up farming as a hobby, and he plans to do that on his 200 acre piece of land in Isinya.

Kenya To Vaccinate Entire Adult Population by June 2022

The Kenyan government has revised its initial vaccination plan that targeted 10 million adults by June 2022. This follows hiccups encountered during the administration of the AstraZeneca.

In the new plan, the govt says it will vaccinate the entire Kenyan adult population of 26 million people by mid-2022.

President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement on Tuesday, June 29 during the 16th Presidential address on the Covid_19 pandemic at State House, Nairobi.

The new plan has been occasioned by the purchase of the first batch of 13 million doses of the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccines which Kenya will receive in August.

According to Uhuru, 10 million adult Kenyans will be vaccinated by Christmas this year, with 150,000 doses being administered daily from August.

“Our strategy was to vaccinate 10 million adults by June 2022 and approximately 16 million by June 2023. Instead of vaccinating 10 million adults by June 2022, we will vaccinate the entire adult population of 26 million Kenyans by 2022. In fact, by Christmas this year, we intend to have vaccinated over 10 million adults,” Uhuru said.

The President also noted that if a vaccine for those under 18 years is approved by early 2022, Kenya will vaccinate a total of 30 million people.

“Because the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is administered using a single shot, the speed of rolling out our vaccination programme will be accelerated,” he said.

Uhuru mentioned that Kenya had struck a deal to get 13 million shots from J&J for the price of 10 million doses.

At the same time, the Head of State said the govt will set up a Human Vaccine Centre in Kenya to elevate the country as a producer for both human and veterinary vaccines.

“Our long-term strategy is to set up a Human Vaccine Centre. I have directed a multi-agency Team to activate this plan and to focus not only on the COVID-19 Vaccine, but on any other human vaccine needed in our region,” said Mr. Kenyatta.

“The national quest to produce human vaccines here in Kenya will elevate our nation as a producer for both human and veterinary vaccines that we currently supply to Eastern Africa, all the way to Morocco in North Africa.”

Kenyatta spoke after the World Bank approved $130 million of additional funds for Kenya to tackle the pandemic.

Curfew Extended For Another 60 days

The 10 pm-4 am curfew will run for another 60 days, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced Tuesday.

Curfew hours were maintained between 7:00 p.m and 4:00 a.m in the COVID-19 hotspot zone; which comprises the counties of Kisumu, Siaya, Homa-Bay, Migori, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, and Trans-Nzoia up to 31st July 2021.

“For the rest of Kenya, the nationwide curfew shall continue to be observed from 10:00 p.m to 4:00 a.m for a further containment period of 60 days,” Uhuru said.

Further, Uhuru said other than the 13 hot spot counties, in-person and congregational worship shall continue to be conducted in keeping with the one-third capacity rule and in accordance with the guidelines of the Inter-Faith Council.

The President also extended prohibition against political gatherings and all public gatherings for a further 60 days.

Additionally, all persons coming into the country must be in possession of a negative COVID-19 PCR Certificate, acquired no more than 96 hours prior to arrival into the Country.

The PCR Certificate should be validated under the Trusted Travel platform for those travelling by air.

In regard to funerals, cremations and other interment ceremonies; Uhuru directed that these ceremonies shall be conducted strictly within 96 hours of confirmation of death.

Attendees, officiators, and facilitators of funerals or graveside/cremation ceremonies shall be limited to 100 persons in total.

All hospitals were directed to limit the number of visitors for hospitalized patients to one visitor per patient per day.

“That all other rules, guidelines, and protocols not reviewed through this Public Order shall continue to apply until otherwise notified,” the president said.

Bill Seeks To Publicise Wealth of President Uhuru, DP Ruto And State Officials

Kenyans could have access to the wealth information of top State officials such as the President should MPs accept to change the law on lifestyle audits.

The Lifestyle Audit Bill, 2021 is a second attempt to remove a restrictive clause that denies the public access to the information on income, assets and liabilities of persons holding public office.

A similar proposal suffered a setback in 2019 after it failed to meet its review timelines. Both bills have been sponsored by Nominated Senator Farhiya Ali Haji.

The Lifestyle Audit Bill, 2021 seeks to scrap section 30 of the Public Officer Ethics Act of 2003 that protects civil servants’ wealth from public scrutiny.

The law stipulates that all self-declared wealth declaration forms be made available online on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) website.

“The contents of a declaration or clarification (on income, assets and liabilities) under this Act shall be accessible to the public,” says the Bill.

“Lifestyle audit may be carried out on the immediate family of a public or a State officer if it is established that a property in question is owned by the public or State officer or members of their immediate family, including joint ownership,” it adds.

The Lifestyle Audit Bill which is before the Senate also imposes a fine of at least Sh5 million or a two-year jail term or both on State officers who provide false information.

In 2018, President Uhuru called for the Lifestyle Audit of State Officers saying no one would be spared including himself.

“All the governors and Cabinet Secretaries will be audited after the two of us (Uhuru and Ruto) before all other Government officials are subjected to the same exercise.

“We are aware some of these corrupt individuals have registered their wealth, including cars and houses, in the names of their spouses and children. We will go for them also,” Uhuru said.

Murkomen ‘can’t wait’ For Uhuru Tour Of Ruto’s Rift Valley Backyard

Weeks after touring Raila’s Nyanza backyard, President Uhuru Kenyatta is scheduled for a similar tour in Deputy President William Ruto’s Rift Valley home turf.

News reaching our newsdesk indicate that the President will tour Rift Valley sometime in July to launch various development projects.

During the tour, President Kenyatta is expected to issue title deeds to residents in Trans Nzoia county. In Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, Uhuru will launch road projects and inspect ongoing works.

“The exact date is yet to be fixed but we have agreed that he will visit Rift Valley in July. It could be mid or end of the month,” said Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny.

“He will be in Anabkoi constituency in Uasin Gishu, then in Elgeyo Marakwet where he will commission projects. We look forward to hosting him.”

It remains unclear whether Ruto will accompany the President during the tour.

Coming at a time when the President and his Deputy are reading from different political scripts, the tour is eagerly awaited by political observers and leaders alike.

Among them is one of Ruto’s attack dog, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen. The former Senate Majority Leaders says the Uhuru’s tour of Rift Valley is long overdue.

“R.Valley region under the leadership of DP Ruto has voted for U.Kenyatta 4 times. For 4 years he has been MIA in the region. His visit is long overdue,” Murkomen said in a tweet.

“We have many questions touching on projects&governance. We shall be there under the leadership of WSR who led us to him. I can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny rubbished claims that Uhuru had abandoned the rift valley region and his deputy following his handshake with Raila Odinga.

“The likes of Murkomen are now cry babies. They should be telling us all these projects we are seeing in Rift Valley and Mt Kenya are implemented by which government. In North Rift alone, we have projects worth over Sh30 billion,” Kutuny told the Star.

Adding: “The only projects that have not taken off are those that were interfered with by pro-Tangatanga leaders who wanted kickbacks. The President means well for every part of this country.”

PHOTO: This Man Has Been Posing As A Woman To Rob Joggers in Lang’ata

Joggers who have been getting robbed along Lang’ata and Mbagathi roads can rest a bit easy after two suspects were arrested Monday morning.

According to the DCI, the middle-aged male suspects were preparing to commit a felony in Lang’ata area of Nairobi when police officers caught them.

As the story goes, the officers and the suspects had just passed by each other when one of the cops noticed something was amiss with the appearance of one of the suspects.

The officer turned back and ordered them to stop but the suspects defied the orders and took to their heels.

“Unbeknownst to the thugs, they had just encountered the lanky, young crime busters based at Langata Police Station, whose speed and proficiency in chasing after thugs is unsurpassed,” said the DCI.

The so-called lanky crime busters caught up with the suspects a few metres past the Mbagathi bridge. The officer’s earlier suspicions about the appearance of one of the suspects were vindicated as they discovered he was a man dressed as a woman.

The cross-dressing suspect – 24-year-old Peter Omweno Momanyi – was found with his tools of trade: a knife and a chain carefully concealed on his waist.

Police also recovered a machete from Momanyi’s accomplice, 25-year-old John Muchiri Kimani.

“Detectives based at Langata have established that the two are among suspects who waylay fitness enthusiasts who jog along Langata and Mbagathi roads, early in the morning and late in the evening,” DCI said.

Members of the public who lost valuables to the suspects are urged to report to Lang’ata Police Station.

City Man Jailed For Spending Money Sent To Him By Mistake

A man on Monday pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing after he spent money that was sent to him by mistake via a mobile money transfer service.

A Nairobi court heard that on November 3, 2020, Cyrus Nzoka Maithya received Sh16, 463 from an M-Pesa number registered in the name of Harriet Karimi.

“Cyrus Nzioka Maithya on November 3, 2020, in Nairobi otherwise in the course of stealing dishonestly received Sh16463 in your Mpesa account knowing or having reasons to believe it was stolen,” read the second count of the charge sheet.

While pleading guilty, Mr Maithya asked the court to forgive him, saying he is a father of two who depend on him.

Nairobi Senior Principal magistrate Martha Nazushi gave him a chance to return the money to the owner but he said he had already spent it.

The magistrate slapped him with a 3-month jail term or an alternative fine of Ksh20,000.

The former actor Joseph Kinuthia alias Omosh has agreed to join a rehabilitation program to fight his perceived alcohol addiction.

This is according to the actor’s former colleague on ‘Tahidi High’, Kevin Onyiso aka Eddy. He said he has come together with other close friends and former colleagues to step in, as Kenyan wellwishers had done enough.

Onyiso, however, said Omosh is still worried about his family and how they will survive without him.

“I just want to request, because he does not have food or money, those he worked with on Tahidi High and were touched by Omosh let us help him,” he said.

Onyiso said they will meet at Omosh’s home on Saturday, July 3, and urged well-wishers to come with food and money for the actor’s family as he begins his rehab.

Those willing to attend the meeting can reach, Kevin Onyiso, on 0724392958.

Meanwhile, Omosh has spoken up about the viral video which captured him in a drunken stupor. He explained that it was an old video and that it was taken as he was coming from a party.

Some of those videos are old and are just being used to escalate the issue. It is good for people to ask randomly from my neighbours. For example, that video I was coming from bash and random people recorded me,” he said.

I would like for people to come to the ground and maybe even speak to my neighbours or even my family around,” he added.

Huddah Monroe Berates “useless” EAC passport

Huddah Monroe is not a fan of the East African Passport as evidenced by an unsolicited rant she unleashed on social media recently.

In her tirade, the Dubai-based Kenyan socialite berated the travel document which was introduced to ease border crossing for East Africans. She also cursed being a Kenyan, lamenting the travel restrictions that come with the passport.

“This is the most useless passport ever, I need a visa to go to hell, surely. it doesn’t even make sense at all, if I died and came back, I would never come back as a Kenyan,” Huddah lashed out.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love my country I believe they can negotiate with other countries so that people go [travel to various countries] for free and so that people get visas on arrival. Why do you treat other people special and they don’t treat you the same way.”
