City Man in Court For Stealing Bibles From Supermarket

A Nairobi city dweller has been arraigned in court for stealing Bibles at a supermarket.

Augustine Wanyoni appeared at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi where he was charged that on November 29, 2021, at Naivas Supermarket Development House along Moi Avenue in Nairobi, he stole two Revised Standard bibles worth Sh1840.

A police report indicated that Wanyoni entered the supermarket at around 7:00 pm posing as a customer.

He then picked up the two Bibles valued at Sh920 each, hid them in his jacket, and passed the cashier counter without paying.

Security personnel became suspicious and stopped him before he could leave. They frisked Wanyoni and recovered the Bibles before reporting him at the Central Police Station.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate Wendy Mucheni, Wanyoni denied the theft charge. He was granted a cash bail of Sh20,000 or alternative bond of a similar amount.

Rapper Abbas Kubaff Robbed of ‘Nairobbery’ Phrase

The veteran Kenyan rapper Andrew Kabiru popularly known as Abbas Kubaff has lamented the theft of the term ‘Nairobbery’.

Taking to social media, Abbas Kubaff accused the creators of a film titled ‘Nairobbery’ of using the term without seeking his permission.

The film ‘Nairobbery’ is the brainchild of film director Jennifer Gatero and tells the story of a group of students who steal Sh.37 million cash in a daring heist.

Sharing a poster of the film on Instagram, Abbas wrote: “So y’all just going to snatch the name Nairobbery and say nothing to the creators???”

The ‘Bumburasha’ rapper added that he felt disrespected while insisting that he coined the phrase ‘Nairobbery’.

“I feel disrespected bruh!! I came up with the name!!” Abbas responded to a fan’s comment.

Indeed, Abbas Kubaff coined the ‘Nairobbery’ portmanteau from the words ‘Nairobi and Robbery’.

Regarded as one of the pioneers of rap in Kenya and East Africa, Abbas was part of the hip-hop group K-South, named after his hood, Kariobangi South.

Abbas formed K South in the late ’90s together with his big brother KC and neighbourhood friend Bamboo(Victoria Kimani’s brother). They went their separate ways in 2005 after KC went missing and Bamboo move to the United States.

Before that, K South had dropped two albums: Nairobbery in 2001 and Nairobizm in 2003.

Nairobbery in particular painted a grim picture of the insecurity situation in Nairobi. At the time, the capital city was a free market for criminal gangs.

It remains unclear if Abbas trademarked the genius portmanteau, but nevertheless, he sure deserved at least a call from the creators of ‘Nairobbery’ film.

I’m Competing With Nyashinski: Femi One on Diana Marua Comparison

Nairobi-based femcee Femi One has not taken kindly to being compared with the newest femcee in town, Diana Marua alias Diana B.

Speaking in an interview with PlugTV, Femi One said it was disrespectful being compared with Diana B.

The Utawezana hitmaker argued that Diana B is a newbie whereas she has been in the game for a long time.

Femi One added that she is only in competition with top-tier rappers like Nyashinski, with whom she recently collaborated on the smash hit ‘Properly’.

“Do not disrespect me like that… I am Femi One. I have experience. I have rapped for so many years. I only compete with the likes of Nyashinski. Those others have a really long way to go before they get to where I am. But with rap, I feel like the more you do it, if you are rapping every day, each and every hour you will be a pro,” said Femi One.

On Diana B’s entry into the rap scene, Femi One said she has no problem with anyone trying their luck at rapping.

“I mean it is showbiz and it is entertainment… she entertained me. So she is just okay. She is fine. Really… she is just okay. I am not a gatekeeper, so whoever feels they want to rap should throw themselves in the rap field with us and work hard,” she said.

Lillian Plays It Cool as Diana Marua Disses Her Romance With Governor Mutua

Former Machakos First Lady Lillian Ng’an’ga has chosen to be unproblematic after Diana Marua took a direct dig at her failed relationship with Governor Alfred Mutua.

Marua, who launched her rap career this past weekend, threw shade at Ng’ang’a and Mutua, referring to their affair as ‘mapenzi ya kifala’.

“Wanaosema tutaachana, sidanganyi watangoja sana, yetu si ya konde boy na Kajala…mapenzi za kujienjoy za kifala, ama kama Lillian na gavana, vita za Chris Brown na Rihanna… Bahati na Marua tamu kama halua…” Diana rapped in her debut song ‘Hatutaachana’.

A section of internet users had hoped this would be enough to offend Lillian Ng’ang’a but the former county first lady threw them a curveball by encouraging Diana Marua.

“Each of us can be anything we want to be. Diana Marua, be all that you can be! All of it.” Lillian wrote on her IG stories.

Nairobi-based rapper King Kaka, born Kennedy Ombima, has officially released his highly anticipated Extended Play (EP), ‘Happy Hour’.

The Kaka Empire CEO launched ‘Happy Hour’ at an invite-only event in Kilimani, Nairobi on Tuesday night.

“It is a big day for me. Today we are celebrating my second birthday. My birthday is on May 7th but today I am dropping my first EP in 13 years, it’s titled ‘Happy Hour,” said King Kaka.

The ‘Wajinga Nyinyi’ hitmaker said ‘Happy Hour’ is a celebration of the gift of life following his health scare.

“Having gone through one of the toughest times in my life when I was ailing, I wanted to do something to celebrate life and all the goodness it has to offer.”

King Kaka was set to release the EP earlier but his illness forced a change of schedule.

“The initial release date for the EP was October 1 but after I got sick, we had to reschedule it further to date. So, the songs were already recorded,” he said.

The 10-track project features Tanzanian singer Rich Mavoko, Ugandan Ykee Benda and Kenya’s Amos and Josh, Wakadinali, Kristoff, Okello Max and Ndume.

‘Happy Hour’ also features Kaka’s wife Nana Owiti on the cover art. King Kaka explained why: “We had already done the cover photo-shoot before. We did some designing but it wasn’t working because I was very thin and sick. So at the time, I decided to display my wife as the cover because she has played a very important role.”

King Kaka also gave an update on his health condition saying, “Right now I am doing fine”.

He added: “I cannot believe it. I was initially 85kgs and dropped to 62kgs. But we now thank God for the gift of life. I could hardly eat and walk, but now I can. There is no better feeling.”

Wanjigi is Dangerous and Should be Arrested: Petitioner Urges Court

The Jimi Wanjigi gun saga has taken another twist after an activist moved to court seeking the arrest of the billionaire tycoon.

Mr Memba Ocharo has filed a case before the Judicial Review Division seeking to have the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) compelled to arrest Wanjigi for being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Through Lawyer Danstan Omari, Ocharo argues that Wanjigi is a danger to the members of the public as no one citizen should have in their custody 688 ammunitions and about 11 guns.

He adds that the conduct of the former police reservist is questionable hence he should not be allowed to possess the guns.

Ocharo notes that Wanjigi was a former Inspector of Police (reserve) who was stripped of all his police powers and ordered to surrender all his firearms and ammunition in his custody. This followed numerous incidences and complaints about his misuse of firearms, the petitioner says.

“Long after the interested party was dismissed from employment with the Police Service for misuse of firearms in threatening and intimidating members of the public, he has been a licensed firearms holder until January 30, 2018, when the licensing board revoked his Firearms Certificate,” the application reads.

It adds: “Wanjigi will soon receive the firearms and ammunition that were initially confiscated yet the Firearm Board has never conducted a due process that is in accord to the law to have Wanjigi firearms certificate procedurally revoked in a manner anticipated in the ruling of this court in Republic v Firearms Licensing Board & another; Ex parte Jimi Wanjigi[2019].”
