Agnes Wanjiru, a Kenyan woman who was allegedly murdered by a British soldier in 2012, was dumped in a septic tank while still alive.
This was revealed by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti when he appeared before the Parliamentary Departmental Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations on Thursday, December 2.
DCI Kinot had been summoned to provide an update on the ongoing investigations into the murder.
The committee faulted the DCI boss for the delay in investigating the matter. Yatta MP Charles Kilonzo pointed out that the DCI was quick to investigate the murder of high profile Dutch businessman Tob Cohen but took over seven years to pursue justice for Agnes Wanjiru.
“You were the lead investigating officer in this matter(Tob Cohen) and within no time you did not even ask for an inquest you were able to prosecute the suspect but when it comes to a poor Kenyan it takes the route of an inquest even after the postmortem was done and it said she was put in the septic tank when she was still alive,” the Yatta MP said.
“The police were not convinced and that is why we insisted you come. When Shamala came here he said the police were not aware that it was murder… I’m very curious to know why the cover-up,” he added.
Kinoti said investigations were at an advanced stage and a team has been constituted to fly to the UK to interview the soldiers involved.
“Our team is on standby for departure to the UK to not only interview the suspect but also the witnesses.
“After we receive communication, our team will travel to the UK to interview the suspects,” Kinoti said.
The DCI boss additionally told the committee that they will also pursue other suspects who assisted the suspect in moving the body from the room and dumping her to the septic tank.
